Hi everyone,
I’ve been writing about key elements of my travel wardrobe as tried and tested over a recent month long summer holiday.
This time I want to look at wide leg pants in silk or a similar fabric. Not exactly the most elegant of descriptions - but there is really no easy way to define the trousers I’m talking about.
Sometimes they’re called palazzo pants. Unhelpfully I think because this reveals so little about them. And makes them sound pretentious when they are decidedly the opposite - relaxed and effortless. ‘Pyjama style’ trouser is maybe a bit closer to the mark. Anyway, case in point below from Sir -
To be clear it’s both the silhouette (wide leg) and the fabric (silk or something equally swishy) that makes these trousers what they are. So we are talking about a quite specific item of clothing.
So, what’s so good about the pyjama style trouser?
Well for starters it is super comfortable. Thanks to what is usually an elastic or drawstring waistband. The fluidity of the fabric and cut also helps.
It packs really well and takes up next to no space in your luggage. A no brainer if you’re a ‘carry on only’ traveller and also if you aren’t.
And it’s extremely versatile. On holiday my pyjama style pants took me from breakfast to dinner to everything in between. Good for shopping, sightseeing or general meandering. Equally wearable by the pool or on the plane. Great with a tank top or an oversized white shirt. And almost any shoe - chunky slide, strappy sandal, thong, ballet flat.
Back at home when the weather is mild to hot, the pyjama style trouser works just as well. Perfect for day when it’s too warm for jeans but you want more coverage than shorts or a dress can offer. Also good for evening - pair with a delicate heel and matching shirt or lightweight knit as needed. Here is more on the pyjama style set.
I really love the silk version above and below from Toteme. Stunning colour, fabric and detailing -
Zara has this and this in viscose which you can throw in the wash -
And Assembly Label has a silk pair that you can hand wash.
Next time I’ll talk about caftans and shirt and boxer short sets - the remaining items on my list of travel well worns.
Finally I want to thank you all so much for being here, I truly appreciate your support.
See you in two weeks.
x
